Shade

Shade is a 12 year old black lab who resides in Redmond, WA. She is the dog who got it all started and she is also our ‘test dog’. After 4 years she still rides in the same original trailer. The reason for not upgrading to newer versions is that quality endurance is part of the testing process.

Almost a daily trip to the off leash area in the Marymoor Park. The distance from home to the park is a nice bike ride, but too far for a dog to run along the bike with a Springer or WalkyDog. Riding instead of running is far more convenient, so she can still enjoy running and socializing with other dogs in the park. Fetching balls from other dogs out of the water, getting sniffled by male buddies, and receiving interesting comments on her DoggyRide. Since she is getting older the competitiveness fades, but the excitement about riding in the trailer is still there. The stroller kit was designed way ahead for her older days, but she refuses to sit in the trailer for a stroll. In her view the trailer was designed for bike rides or is it the same human form of denial of aging… A photoshoot with the stroller on Alki in front of the Seattle skyline (with overcast skies) turned into a hilarious experience as she attempted to jump out several times.

We test the endurance of our trailers by testing equipment to meet ASTM standards, but still there is the field testing. The field testing is needed to discover wear on parts that are excluded by the standard types of mechanical tests. Coming week we test a new hitch and I hope Shade is prepared for around 100 miles over 5 days. Not only the Snoqualmie Valley, John Wayne Pioneer and the Burke Gilman trail will be test ground, but also rough mountain biking terrain. When the route differs Shade gets these questioning eyes, like where we are heading today? She is good rider, always lies down, except for the last mile to the park and once the route is unknown she lies down and watches around. For her it has become a crucial part of the outdoors experience.

Twister (Dutch)

Honden zijn slim. Als hondeigenaar wordt ik daar regelmatig mee geconfronteerd. Ook Twister is slim. Twister is sinds de uitzending van het programma Kassa onze held.

De DoggyRide is niet uit de lucht komen vallen. Daar is maanden aan ontwikkeling en testen aan vooraf gegaan en het gebruik over de loop der jaren heeft geleerd dat bepaalde materialen beter kunnen of onderdelen en functies anders kunnen. Product verbeteringen maken een product meer volwassen, zodat het jarenlang plezier geeft voor de gebruiker. Echter vrij snel nadat de DoggyRide op de markt maakte een bedrijf in Duitsland een kopie van ons product en deed er een ander doek over heen om te laten lijken dat het een ander product is. Onder welke categorie (mis)daad dit valt of wat de juridische gevolgen hiervan kunnen zijn gaat deze column niet over. Wel over schapendoes Twister die dit ontdekte en op een ludieke wijze dit aan het licht deed brengen, echter aan het eind van liedje hiervoor gestraft werd.

Door gebruikmaking van de goedkoopste materialen wordt met een namaakproduct getracht een goedkoper product op de markt te zetten en zodanig de consument de indruk te geven dat men het originele product koopt voor een goedkopere prijs. Goedkoop is duurkoop en alle waarde naar zijn geld zijn uitdrukkingen die hier zijn oorsprong in vinden. Echter als consument is het oppassen geblazen. Sommige winkeliers proberen dit op te lossen door gewoon een slechte kwaliteit namaakproduct duur aan te bieden. Als u een DoggyRide weet u wat u koopt. Wij doen ons vak met liefde, maken mooie producten en gebruiken hiervoor de beste kwaliteit materialen en mocht er toch wat mee zijn dan weet u ons te vinden.

Terug naar Twister. Zijn baasjes hadden voor hem zo’n namaak kar bij de lokale Pet’s Place aangeschaft, omdat ze het wel een goed idee vonden om eens te gaan fietsen met hem. Twister vondt dat ook wel een goed idee, maar dan wel in een goeie kar. Tijdens de eerste rit wilde hij dat wel even uittesten, trok het gaas kapot, sprong er uit en melde zich triomfantelijk bij de baas. Wij zijn samen met zijn baasjes blij dat Twister niet door een auto overreden is tijdens deze actie. Verhaal halen door de baasjes bij de winkelier leverde geen resultaat op, waarna men zich meldde bij het programma Kassa. Uiteindelijk komt hondentherapeut Marco Starink met een voorstel. Geef de hond een gedragstraining dat hij zoiets niet meer doet.

We hebben een speelgoed pieper voor Twister liggen met een toepasselijke tekst op de onderkant: ‘I’d rather be in the DoggyRide’. Zijn baasjes hoeven alleen even contact met ons op te nemen. Dan kunnen ze tevens onze originele DoggyRide uittesten en is die rare gedragstraining helemaal niet nodig. Gedragstrainingen zijn meer bestemd voor de winkeliers die deze namaakkarren verkopen.

The Dog in the Logo

I have had a number of people asking me about the cute dog inside our brand name logo. Where does it come from? What type of dog is it? I would like to pass the last question on to the dog-loving DoggyRiders, but will elaborate on how it came there.

In the first series of products back in 2003 there was no dog in the logo. In October 2003 a lady sends us the wonderful picture below of her dog asking whether the DoggyRide bicycle trailer would be a good fit to take Snoopy on bike rides. Struck by the begging eyes and hanging ears we asked the owner whether we could use her dog image to become our mascot. The owner agreed and waited for a new production run that included Snoopy in the logo. Snoopy still enjoys riding the DoggyRide and the owner is delighted by the fact that thousands of other dog lovers ride around with her dog on the bicycle trailer.

The other part of the story is that Snoopy will disappear from a renewed brand name logo. We are in the process of modernizing and synchronizing our brand name logos, but nevertheless a dog figure will re-appear in the new logo. However, Snoopy remains our mascot and wishes you a safe and exciting ride.
